Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a great holiday season and are feeling rested and ready to start out 2015 on a healthy note.  It's a good time to reflect and think about what you want to bring to this new year.   January is the month we all have the motivation to change our bad habits and start on a healthy track.  I ended 2014 with a few too many indulgences so  I started this month on an elimination diet and a week  free of social media.   It felt really good. It was also hard and I had to be really conscious and present in my actions.  I now feel more aware and mindful in my life.  I…

Halloween is upon us.    My kids are counting down the days. Halloween isn't  my favorite holiday  but I am not going to get all Debbie Downer on you.    While I don't like the excess of candy and sugar that is consumed, there are a lot of fun things about Halloween and a lot of family activities.  We love to   carve pumpkins we picked from the pumpkin patch, toast the seeds, make  fun Halloween decorations, bake this pumpkin bread and assemble these (more…)

Homemade Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets

Homemade Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets

I am not going to lie -  I have a box of processed chicken nuggets in my freezer for those emergency nights we all have when there is just no time.   Or for when a babysitter is coming and I am showered and dressed to go out and I'm  not about to step into the kitchen. I know we all have those nights.  And there is nothing wrong with that.  But this recipe isn't for one of those nights. (more…)

Homemade Gummy Snacks

Homemade Gummy Snacks

My kids love  gummy snacks!   I have bought the packaged variety for a while but realized how simple and how much healthier it is to make your own.  I have been making homemade jello this past year from grass-fed gelatin that I get on Amazon.com and decided to try making gummy snacks too,  which is essentially a thicker, more condensed jello.  I use the unflavored variety of  Great  Lakes Gelatin and one bottles has about 65 1 tablespoon servings, so it lasts a long time. This recipe  takes about 5-10 minutes to make and then pop it in the fridge for 30-60 minutes to harden. Grass-fed gelatin is therapeutic in nature as it is great for (more…)

Mumford and Sons Radio is playing on Pandora and my office, which I have neglected since we moved home in mid-June is now in complete disarray as I make my way through files and folders.   For the first time in months there are no little mouths to feed, no fights to referee, no one to build logos with.  No one to interrupt me as I try to get something accomplished.  Well, until 3:30pm anyway. About 4 years ago, I vividly remember being in the playroom with my one and three year old children.  Cecilia had just started walking and  for the first time was getting into Max's "stuff" which he was not too happy about.  I was completely…

We are going camping this weekend  for three nights.    I like to camp, but I don't loooove to camp. One weekend last month my husband was going out of town and we were talking about what the kids and I were going to do.  He said, Why don't you take the kids camping? I was horrified.  I looked at him with my eyebrows raised, mouth agape. Camp.  Without you?   Why why why would I do that?  No no.... I have other things planned.  Or I will soon.  Like heading into San Fransisco for one.   Camp on my own, pshhhhh. My bestie Jamie is like my superhero.   She'll just pack up the car with her 4 kids and take them camping…

Seedful Energy Snack

Seedful Energy Snack

These treats are very similar to my Powder Day Energy Bars but without any nuts.  Several good friends have nut allergies in their family  and I wanted to make something delicious for them.    Nut allergies are becoming more and more common and many classerooms do not allow nuts of any kind in kids lunches.   This is a safe  and delicious treat to pack in your kids lunchbox, to bring as a class snack, or to take on outdoor adventures! Seeds are amazingly nutritious and these energy treats have pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds.  Seeds are the life force of a plant and provide lots of energy.   They pack a nutritional punch as they are…

Packing the kids lunch everyday can be a little overwhelming.   We try to keep a nice variety of healthy items in their lunchbox but it seems easy to run out of ideas.   That's where these little muffins come in.  The muffins are made with coconut flour which is packed with fiber, protein and healthy fat so it actually fills the kids up!  About 50% of the fat in coconut oil is  lauric acid which is very health supportive and anti-bacterial.  I feel good about including these in their lunch box and the kids love them.
